Some facts in advance:

  • As business activities not accompanied by direct investments, China only allows Representative Offices. The procedure is transparent, but there are a number of strict rules about the office location, staff employment and taxation.
  • Branch offices are not permitted.
  • Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprises ( WFOE), means also 100% foreign owned subsidiaries of a foreign company, and also Joint Ventures with Chinese partners are possible (but the latter hardly to recommend).
  • Foreigners, alike also with Chinese natives, are not allowed to acquire property on real estate. Instead there are long-term lease contracts (50 - 70) years.
